BLG Mining · Project
Kamanjab Copper Mine.
An open-pit copper operation in the Kunene Region of Namibia, mining 25,000 tonnes of ROM a month and taking it all the way to cathode on site.
All mines ↗The brief
Copper, start to finish, in the Kunene.
Kamanjab is an oxide and sulphide copper operation held 100% by Cutra Mining Namibia and operated by BLG Mining. The pit is worked conventionally, truck and shovel, with Doosan excavators and articulated dump trucks on the benches.
What makes the asset unusual for its size is that nothing leaves site as raw material. ROM is crushed, leached in agitated tanks and taken through electrowinning to copper cathode within the mine boundary, holding 85% recovery in circuit. A workforce of twenty runs the whole chain.
Each month closes with one reconciliation between what the geologists modelled, what the pit delivered and what the plant produced. When a number moves, the people who can explain it are on site.

The chain
From bench to cathode.
Drill & Blast
In-house drill and blast to a fragmentation spec set by the plant, not by the drill.
Load & Haul
Doosan excavators and ADTs on GPS dispatch, matched so neither the shovel nor the truck waits.
Crush & Leach
Crushing into agitated leach tanks, with grade control drilled on a 50 m × 50 m pattern feeding the blend.
Electrowin
Electrowinning to copper cathode on site, holding 85% recovery in circuit.
Also in production
The other side of the portfolio.
Anthracite at Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal: 30,000 tonnes of ROM a month, strip mined and washed through dense-media separation.
